Tourists at Angkor Wat

At first I was put off by all the people; how could I get a good shot of my subject when there were tourists everywhere? Then I decided to make the tourists my subject.

After leaving Angkor Wat we drove through the woods and through the gate to the largest ancient walled city: Angkor Phrom.

Inside Angkor Phrom is Bayon, the latest Angkor Wat temple constructed, in the 13th century.

Bayon is most famous for it's huge stone heads; there are many like this.

The heads are carved on the four sides of the towers inside Bayon. There are 54 towers.

Outside of the Bayon temple there are many other smaller temples. We walked across the grass in the warm sunlight on a lazy day in Angkor Wat to see some of them and take these photos.

In the shade of a big tree a few food vendors with fruit and drinks wait for a customer to come along.

Cambodian Countryside

We took a drive through the Cambodian countryside to visit a far away temple and we enjoyed seeing the peaceful villages and farm life as we drove by.

Banteay Srey

An hour north of the town of Siem Reap we came to the small temple of Banteay Srey. Bathed in the shadows and warm sunlight of late afternoon this temple amazed us with its rich complexity.

People of Cambodia

Girl in Restaurant

At times it seemed like everyone we saw was trying to sell us something, like this girl for instance; she was selling trinkets in a restaurant where we stopped for lunch. But when I look back at my photos I see there are plenty of people just going about their own lives.

What I can say is that the people we met in Cambodia were kind and gentle people, quick to laugh, unfailingly polite, and welcoming to the tourists.

They also universally spoke excellent English.
