Racing in Mauritius

In Port Louis' inner basin

The racing fleet from Grand Bay Yacht Club just rafted here overnight, for the party, but when a cyclone comes to Mauritius all the boats in Mauritius try to cram into here; it is the only safe "hurricane hole" in Mauritius

Rafted with the other race boats

The hills behind Port Louis cause clouds to form and quite a lot of mist and rain. We noticed this in the distance from Grand Bay, where the weather is usually a lot better (no hills) but only when we got back to Port Louis did we realize what a difference it makes.

The old and the new

You can see in these photos how bows have changed. Wings is obviously quite old fashioned now; a classic.

On another day we photographed the racing boats at Grand Bay Yacht Club as they headed out to round Illes de plate north of Mauritius.

Mt. Si, Mt Rainier, & Rose Marie in the snow.

Mt Si

Kim posted this shot which must have been taken from their upper floor window facing Mount Si. What a beautiful scene but it sure looks cold. Washington State is having a big snowfall and cold weather just before Thanksgiving.

And my daughter Kathy sent me the following shots:

Moon over Mauritius

Moon over Muaritius

By Sunday night things quiet down in Grand Bay, Mauritius and when the moon comes over the hotel on the north shore it is peaceful again after a busy weekend.

But during the day, both Saturday and Sunday, this place is busy with people enjoying thier weekend. The sailing catamarans go out in the morning with their decks crowded with tourists excited about a day on the water and I don't think they are disapointed, the Cats here sail out and sail back in good winds and it must be fun; when they come in the music is on and the tourists are dancing on the foredeck. Of course the sports fishing boats went out earlier and they come back in the afternoon too, some with fish on and some without.

Over at the yacht club the local french families come down and take out their speedboats; big fiberglass pointed machinines with two or three huge outboard motors. They launch them and head out, to who knows where. By 4:00PM they are coming back. There is a lot of activity at the launch ramp in the afternoon with the returning speedboats, the returning flying fiftieen sailboats, and all the locals swiming and picnicing around the ramp.

We watch it all form Wings, anchored in the bay, or from the yacht club if we went in for a drink.

Later the sun goes down and the moon comes up and we drink our wine in Wings' cockpit and reflect on another good day in Mauritius.
